Tour Bus Crashes into Stalled SUV on Freeway on Mother’s Day

HACIENDA HEIGHTS, Calif. (May 12, 2025) — One dead, 32 injured after a crash on the 60 Freeway involving a tour bus hitting a stalled SUV in Hacienda Heights.

The California Highway Patrol reported the crash just after 5 a.m. on Sunday, May 11th, 2025.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and located the Nissan SUV fully engulfed in flames and confirmed the death of its driver on scene.

Meanwhile, roughly half of the 63 people riding on the bus were injured, including two who had major injuries. Some 32 people in total were taken to a hospital with a range of injuries.

The Nissan SUV had apparently stalled in traffic lanes before the bus crashed into the back of it. Upon impact, the tour bus went off onto the right shoulder of the freeway and hit a guardrail.

Investigators are working on the case, but do not suspect alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Also, detectives do not know why the Nissan SUV was stopped in freeway lanes.

“All the passengers aboard this bus were likely traumatized by this collision, and those injured may need ongoing medical care,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Tour buses are difficult to control at freeway speed, and the driver could be held accountable.”

The tour bus driver, Sui Sheng Du, had picked up passengers from the Indio area and was headed to Koreatown at the time of the collision.

Detectives will need to determine if the bus was traveling above the speed limit or if distracted driving was a factor in the crash.
