Fatal Truck Crash I-805 Freeway, Interstate 8 in Mission Valley

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (March 3, 2026) — At least one person was killed in a fiery big rig crash early Tuesday on southbound Interstate 805 near Interstate 8 in Mission Valley, shutting down most lanes and snarling the morning commute.
The collision was reported on March 3rd about 6:05 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities initially expected all southbound lanes to remain closed for four to five hours.
Before 7:30 a.m., officers reopened one lane, allowing limited traffic through. By 10:40 a.m., Caltrans said vehicles were being funneled through the far-left No. 1 lane, but warned it would be several more hours before all lanes reopened.
Officer Michael Meza said it was unclear how many vehicles were involved. Witnesses reported a big rig struck a freeway wall, though some indicated another vehicle may have been involved. It was not immediately known whether the person killed was the truck driver or an occupant of another vehicle.
Video showed flames and heavy smoke blocking the three right lanes. The truck was hauling almonds, and while fuel spilled onto the roadway, no hazardous materials were involved, authorities said.
