Man, 35, Arrested DUI; Pedestrian Killed
VISALIA, Calif. (June 5, 2023) – A fatal Visalia pedestrian accident on Highway 198 happened Sunday night near Giddings Street.
The hit-and-run collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. on June 5th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Also, police arrested the 35-year-old driver for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
Someone called 911 to report a pedestrian stumbling on eastbound Highway 198. Police responded and located the victim in the roadway. The unidentified pedestrian suffered major injuries when they were hit by a vehicle. The person died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle involved failed to stop after the crash. However, James Martinez of Exeter later returned to the crash scene. The motorist cooperated with the investigation, but police determined he was driving under the influence of alcohol and was arrested.
The case remains under investigation, but preliminary indications are the driver is not at fault for the man’s death.
