Wrong-way Driver Killed in Crash on Harbor Freeway in South Los Angeles
GARDENA, Calif. (Feb. 1, 2021) – A wrong-way driver triggered a multi-vehicle crash early Monday in Gardena on the Harbor 110 Freeway in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles.
The 12:40 a.m. crash left one person dead and several others with injuries.
Police were told the driver who died was traveling northbound in the southbound number three lane of the Harbor Freeway. The car collided with at least two other vehicles, just north of the Gardena (91) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Meanwhile, police say the collision caused one of the vehicles to overturned and left the others with serious damage.
A woman who was in an SUV was extricated by firefighters and rushed to a hospital with unknown injuries.
The CHP closed down all southbound lanes of the freeway from the Redondo Beach Boulevard on-ramp to the southbound Harbor Freeway, according to the CHP. By 3 a.m., the numbers 1and 2 lanes eventually reopened. Later by 5:15 a.m., the rest of the freeway lanes opened up.
The cause of the crash and liability will be determined by police when the investigation is completed.
