Woman, 49, Killed in Crash with Suspected Wrong-way Driver
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2024) — An alleged wrong-way driver faces DUI and manslaughter charges after a fatal two-vehicle crash on the Interstate 8 Freeway near state Route 163 in Del Cerro, San Diego County.
The collision occurred just after 12:44 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13th, according to the Times of San Diego.
Briana Michelle Contreras, 24, the alleged wrong-way driver, is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and or drugs, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The suspect was reportedly driving a white Honda Civic eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Interstate 8 Freeway. Someone called 911 to report the wrong-way driver and a police helicopter began tracking the driver near College Avenue. However, they were unable to prevent a collision and the Honda crashed into a black Nissan Kicks in the left lane of the westbound I-8, police said.
The unidentified 49-year-old driver in the Nissan was transported to a hospital where she later died.
Meanwhile, the wrong-way driver suspect, Briana Michelle Contreras, suffered major injuries and was also taken to a hospital. She is facing charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, police said.
Additionally, police closed down the westbound lanes of the Interstate 8 for roughly two hours to investigate the scene of the collision.
