Man Killed, 3 Injured in Orange Car Accident
ORANGE, Calif. (July 10, 2023) – A wrong-way driver is dead and three others were injured Saturday night in a crash at Katella Avenue between Cambridge and Shaffer streets in Orange.
The wrong way driver in a sedan collided with a pickup truck and a car around 8:19 p.m. on July 8th, according to the Orange Police Department and the Orange County Register.
Prior to the collision, police responded to the intersection of Katella Avenue and Tustin Street after someone reported a man passed out behind the wheel of a Hyundai Elantra. The traffic light was green, but the man was asleep, witnesses told authorities. Police responded, but the man woke up and started driving westbound on Katella Avenue. He passed through the intersection at Cambridge Street and continued driving, but drifted into oncoming traffic before reaching Shaffer Street.
The man collided with the drivers of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a Honda Insight. That’s when the man driving the Hyundai Elantra was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene.
Paramedics assessed the occupants from the pickup and the Honda. The driver from the Toyota Tundra and his 4-year-old daughter were both transported to a hospital to treat minor injuries and the second driver was treated on scene for minor injuries.
Meanwhile, there is an ongoing investigation into whether the wrong-way driver was experiencing a medical emergency or if he was DUI. The motorist does have prior arrests for DUI, police said.
Authorities closed down Katella Avenue between Cambridge and Shaffer streets to investigate. Witnesses or anyone with information about the collision may contact Detective Rocha at 714-744-7342.
