GONZALES, Calif. (June 19, 2023) — Two people died, four were injured early Sunday in a fatal crash on Highway 101 involving a wrong-way driver, just south of Gonzales in South Monterey County.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred around 3:34 a.m., just south of 5th Street, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and KSBW Action News.
Police responded to the head-on collision between a wrong-way driver in a red 2004 Dodge Neon and a southbound black 2015 Honda Civic.
Paramedics responded and located two people dead in the Dodge Neon. One was the driver of the Dodge and the other a back seat passenger. Meanwhile, two other passengers from the Neon were seriously injured in the collision. Police say one of the surviving passengers told officials the group had been at a bar in Soledad.
Also, the driver from the Honda Civic was trapped in the car. Firefighters responded and extricated him and he was transported to a hospital with multiple fractures in his leg or legs. His female passenger managed to exit the car and had complaints of injuries.
Both people were taken by ambulances to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas.
The fatal Highway 101 crash remains under investigation.
