SOLANO COUNTY, Calif. (May 1, 2025) — A deadly, wrong-way driver crash happened early Thursday on the I-680 Freeway, just south of Lake Herman Road in Solano County.
The traffic accident occurred around 12:18 a.m. on May 1st, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Contra Costa Area station.
Several motorists including a driver in a black Honda Accord reported dodging a wrong-way driver in a dark-colored 2022 Toyota RAV4 SUV traveling southbound in the northbound lanes in the Contra Costa area, police said. The Honda driver crashed their vehicle to avoid being hit by the SUV.
Police were searching for the driver, but before they could locate the vehicle it crashed head-on into a white Dodge Challenger on the transition between State Route 24 to northbound I-680, the report said.
Both vehicles sustained major damage and the SUV overturned, and unfortunately, the driver of the Dodge died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota survived with major injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Police determined the suspected wrong-way driver was intoxicated and placed the person under arrest. The motorist faces felony charges of DUI and vehicular manslaughter once they are medically cleared.
