3-Vehicle Collision on I-15 Freeway
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (August 28, 2023) — A wrong-way driver caused a fatal multi-vehicle crash on the Interstate 15 Freeway early Sunday near Friars Road in Mission Valley.
The three-vehicle collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. on August 27th, according to the California Highway Patrol report.
One of the motorists involved died following the collision and police closed down a portion of the freeway at Friars Road, the Times of San Diego reports.
A witnesses called 911 to report a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the freeway just moments before the collision.
The drivers involved were a Honda Fit, Nissan Altima and an Infiniti SUV.
Firefighters responded and located a driver from the Honda trapped in their vehicle. They used the “Jaws of Life” to cut open the vehicle and eventually freed the person after roughly 25 minutes. Sadly, the motorist died after the collision.
A second person from a separate vehicle suffered injuries and was transported to the hospital in unknown condition.
An investigation into the fatal crash on the 15 Freeway is underway.
