Fatality in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-80 Near Clipper Gap in Placer County

AUBURN, Calif., (May 27, 2026) — A tragic incident on Interstate 80 East near Clipper Gap Road in Placer County resulted in a fatality late Tuesday night, involving a big rig and multiple vehicles.
The collision reportedly occurred north of Auburn near Lake Theordore on May 26th around 11:12 p.m., when a semi-truck collided with a gray Toyota Tacoma truck and another unidentified vehicle near a barrier. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) logs indicate the semi-truck ended up on the westbound side, causing debris and liquid to spread across the freeway.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene shortly after the accident was reported. The semi-truck, which was carrying a tanker trailer filled with water, was overturned and leaking fuel, while a secondary fire was reported involving a white or silver pickup truck. Efforts by fire services to control the blaze were complicated by the proximity of the burning vehicles to leaking fuel.
The driver of the semi-truck reportedly fled the scene wearing a black hoodie, and authorities are actively searching for him. Meanwhile, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deployed drones equipped with thermal cameras to assist in locating the driver. The identities of the other individuals involved have not been released.
Caltrans crews worked overnight to clear the wreckage and reopen the affected lanes by 4:23 a.m., and no hazardous materials were detected by the Placer Hills Fire Department.
This incident remains under investigation by the CHP, and they urge anyone with information or who witnessed the crash to come forward.
