SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA (August 2, 2022)  – Faysal Hekmat was killed after a crash on Highway 1 on the Vandenberg Space Force Base.

The coroner’s office identified the 33-year-old Santa Maria man as the victim of the fatal wreck which took place last week on Thursday.

The incident happened when Faysal Hekmat was riding a motorcycle south on Highway 1 on the Vandenberg Space Force Base. At the same time, a GMC Yukon was going north.

For an unknown reason, the SUV drifted across the dirt center median and slammed into the motorcyclist head-on. The two crashed near San Antonio Road and Firefighter Road.

Natalia Mesa, 21, Injured in Wreck

The Noozhawk and KEYT News wrote that the accident occurred on July 28 at about 7:40 a.m. The rider ended up ejected from his bike and then struck the GMC.

He plunged down an embankment off the highway as a result of the collision. The California Highway Patrol said his motorcycle caught fire and struck a Lincoln Navigator.

Faysal Hekma died at the scene of the crash. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Santa Maria woman driving the GMC sustained major injuries following the wreck.

Paramedics rushed Natalia Mesa to the Marian Regional Medical Center for further aid. CHP added that Jeep Cherokee and a Subaru Legacy heading north became involved in the process.

Debris from the first incident hit the Jeep while the Subaru veered into the median and came to a stop with minor damage. The cause of the Vandenberg Space Force Base crash is still under investigation.
