SANTA MARGARITA, CA (April 17, 2022) – Officers detained Felipe Antonio Gonzalez after a fatal DUI crash on Highway 101 near Santa Margarita.

The California Highway Patrol determined that the 21-year-old Santa Maria man was under the influence of alcohol when the wreck happened.

The incident began when Felipe Antonio Gonzalez was driving a Chevy Suburban north on Highway 101 near Santa Margarita. He was traveling in excess of 65 mph at the time.

Ahead of him, a Chevrolet Cruze pulled over and stopped on the asphalt shoulder. Felipe Antonio Gonzalez then lost control of his car and drifted across the right lane.

The Suburban went onto the shoulder and hit the rear of the Cruze with five Santa Maria residents inside. The Cruze flew about 120 feet, just south of the Santa Barbara Road exit ramp.

CHP said the car spun counter-clockwise and came to a rest. The Tribune and Noozhawk News wrote that the collision took place on Saturday night.

2 Killed, 3 Injured in Wreck

Officers reported the accident on April 16 at around 8 p.m. The two rear passengers in the Cruze, Maria Hernandez, 54, and Celene Reducindo, 47, died due to the force of the collision.

The driver of the Cruze, Berenice Cortez Pineda, 47, and her two other passengers sustained critical injuries following the wreck. CHP identified them as Ricardo Gonzalez, 48; and a 3-year-old girl.

Paramedics rushed the patients to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo for treatment. Felipe Antonio Gonzalez suffered minor wounds as a result of the crash.

Medical personnel took him to the Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton for further aid. CHP arrested the man on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.

Officers charged Felipe Antonio Gonzalez with felony DUI and driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.10%, both causing bodily injury.

They soon booked him into San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bail. The DUI crash is still under investigation.
