Man Killed; Wrong-Way Driver Arrested
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (July 28, 2023) — Fernando Goneortiz, 29, was arrested Wednesday after a fatal wrong-way crash on the Interstate 805 Freeway near the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego.
The collision occurred in the southbound lanes of the I-805 Freeway near the border with Mexico on Wednesday, July 26th between two motorists, according to CBS 8 News.
Fernando Goneortiz Injured; Driver in Van Killed
Police say Fernando Goneortiz was driving a white Audi sedan northbound in the southbound lanes of the 805 Freeway when he attempted to avoid crossing the border and made a U-turn. He collided head on with a blue Honda van. Abel Bermudez Griego, 57, of Los Angeles, who was driving the van, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the collision.
Goneortiz suffered major non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment and later arrested on felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges.
Investigators are working on the case.
