Former San José State Star Chandler Jones Dies at 33 in Freeway Accident

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (June 24, 2025) — Chandler “The Jet” Jones, a record-setting wide receiver and local football figure, died following a pedestrian accident on the Marina (90) Freeway in Los Angeles.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Jones was struck in the slow lane early Sunday by a driver in a dark blue Toyota RAV4 on the 90 Freeway near the Centinela Avenue off-ramp around 2 a.m. on June 22, 2025.

The Los Angeles Fire Department sent paramedics who pronounced his death at the scene. Later, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified him and confirmed his death.

Chandler Jones first made his mark at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, where he still holds records for the longest kickoff return (97 yards) and longest fumble recovery (98 yards), according to the Los Angeles Times.

Later at San José State University, he became a standout wide receiver as a San José Spartan. He landed a brief professional career and also coached at Bishop Montgomery, the College of Idaho, and the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes.

The circumstances leading up to the deadly crash are under investigation.
