FORT IRWIN, California (June 3, 2014) — Dail Lee Keiper, Sr., 62, of Barstow was killed and eight others including two soldiers were injured early Monday morning when a Victor Valley Transit Authority bus struck a big rig truck on Fort Irwin Road, according to a press release by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner.
The bus reportedly struck the 5-ton tractor trailer truck because the vehicle didn’t have its lights on and the bus driver did not see it in the predawn darkness, the Press Enterprise said.
Keiper was pronounced dead at the scene of the Fort Irwin bus accident about 5:35 a.m. The Fort Irwin police and fire departments were at the scene and assisted those injured including the bus driver. Those hurt were taken by ambulance to Weed Army Medical Center, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and Loma Linda University Medical Center, according to the Press Enterprise.
“Crashes involving bus companies have been making headlines recently, calling into question the inherent lack of safety for passengers aboard these vehicles who are not provided with seat belts,” said Attorney James Johnson. “A pending law requiring seat belts in 2016 will not save lives today and will not affect all types of buses including inner city transit buses.”
