Fortino Gonzalez Vazquez Killed in San Diego Crash on I-15 Freeway
Vista Man, 59, Identified as Victim of Multi-Vehicle Crash on Freeway
SAN DIEGO, Calif., (October 29, 2026) — Fortino Gonzalez Vazquez, 59, of Vista, has been identified as the father who died Sunday in a San Diego crash on the Interstate 15 Freeway North near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:32 AM on Oct. 25th, according to the California Highway Patrol. Police say the man’s adult driver had called him for help after her grey Mazda became disabled in the center divider of the freeway. However, shortly after he arrived on scene, his minivan was sideswiped by an oncoming Toyota Corolla, triggering a second collision with an SUV. Another vehicle was also involved in the crash.
The vehicle collided in the No. 1 Lane and several middle lanes. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, with units arriving shortly after the accident was reported. Despite their efforts, Fortino Gonzalez Vazquez succumbed to his injuries as a result of the collision on scene at 3:53 AM, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner report. The man’s daughter and her children from the Mazda were not harmed.
Meanwhile, the drivers of the Toyota and the SUV were both hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert due to the severity of the incident, and a hard closure was implemented to manage traffic flow.
Police are urging any witnesses to come forward with information that may assist in their investigation.
