Francisco Gonzalez Struck, Killed in Hit-and-run Crash on Broadway

Bicycle Rider Killed in Crash Identified

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 26, 2023) – Francisco Gonzalez, 65, has been identified as the bicycle rider who died in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday on Broadway in southeast Los Angeles.

The deadly crash occurred at around 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24th, according to the Los Angles Police Department.

Felipe Avalos, 66, of Compton, was allegedly driving a Chevrolet Astro van that struck the victim as he rode his bike along Broadway near 115th Street, police said. The victim got stuck underneath the van and was then dragged for several blocks, roughly a mile, before he became dislodged at El Segundo Boulevard, police said. The driver fled without stopping to help the victim who died at the scene.

Police later arrested Felipe Avalos for the death of the bicyclist.

The Compton man was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and is being held on $50,000 bail, according to the Los Angeles police and sheriff’s departments.

Police Tracked Down Suspect

Investigators with the LAPD’s South Traffic Division were able to find surveillance video that
captured the bicycle accident and provided images of the suspect’s older model Chevrolet Astro van. Also, witnesses provided police with a possible license plate number.

During the investigation, police were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle parked in a driveway at a Compton home and observed the suspect matching the description provided by witnesses. Police placed Felipe Avalos under arrest as he was exiting his home.

Witnesses or anyone with information about the fatal crash may contact detectives at the LAPD South Traffic Division at 323-421-2500, or the 24-hour tip line 877-LAPD-247.
