Fred Cormia Killed; 2 Injured in Chiriaco Summit Crash on 10 Freeway
Man, 67, Killed; Texas Woman, 38, Injured
CHIRIACO SUMMIT (June 15, 2017)- According to KESQ News, a deadly crash involving two big rigs were reported Thursday morning on westbound Interstate 10 resulting in the death of a man and injuries to a woman.
Authorities received notification of the crash at around 7:20 a.m.
Preliminary investigations disclose that the driver of a Freightliner identified as Fred Cormia, 67, of Los Angeles, struck the rear of an International Big Rig that had been parked along the right shoulder operated by a 38-year-old woman of Lubbock, Texas.
After hitting the rear of the International Big Rig, the Freightliner veered off the freeway and into the open plane as Fred Cormia was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Cormia’s passenger who had been asleep in the back sustained moderate injuries. He was transported by ambulances to Desert Regional Med Center.
Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Texas woman was moderately injured with undisclosed injuries. She was transported to Desert Regional as well. She had also been accompanied by a passenger who was uninjured.
An estimated total of 120-150 gallons of fuel was lost and spilled throughout the road as a result of the wreck which led to the closure of party of the westbound freeway for several hours while Riverside County Environmental Health helped clear the road.
California Highway Patrol will handle the investigation.
