Driver Exits Disabled Car, Hit While Standing in Traffic Lanes
FREMONT, Calif. (June 11, 2021) — A fatal Fremont crash happened Thursday after a driver exited his car following a solo-vehicle crash. A second motorist struck the victim as the pedestrian stood on the Interstate 880 Freeway.
The motorist suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene after being hit by the other vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.
According to the CHP, the victim was driving a Toyota Camry southbound on Interstate 880 when they struck a metal and plastic attenuator that divides the No. 3 and No. 4 lanes on the freeway. The attenuators are in place due to a long-term construction project.
There were construction workers on the scene, but no work was being conducted at the time of the initial solo-vehicle collision.
The Toyota became disabled following the 11 p.m. collision. It came to a stop facing the northbound direction in the No. 3 lane. Meanwhile, the driver got out of the Toyota and stood in one of the slow lanes. That’s when an oncoming Ford Fusion struck the driver standing in the freeway.
Also, the driver in the Ford stopped and cooperated with the CHP. Investigators do not suspect the Ford’s driver was DUI, but there is no word yet on what led up to the first collision involving the Toyota driver.
Authorities issued a traffic alert until about 1:15 a.m. on Friday morning. Investigators are piecing together what happened and will determine fault.
