FRESNO COUNTY: I-5 Freeway Crash Near Derrick Avenue in Cantua Creek

Major Injury Collision on I-5 Freeway in Cantua Creek
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (April 10, 2025) — A 21-year-old San Jose woman died in a crash Thursday morning in Cantua Creek on the southbound Interstate 5 Freeway, just south of Derrick Avenue (SR-33) in Fresno County.
The multi-vehicle crash happened at 5:16 a.m. on April 10th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The drivers of a 1997 Honda Del Sol and a 2016 Nissan Rogue were first to collide when the right front of the Honda hit the left rear of the Nissan. The Honda reportedly spun out and was hit on its back right side by a southbound 2021 Hyundai Sonata. Upon impact, the Honda was propelled across lanes into a cable barrier.
CHP officials report one of the vehicles overturned and debris from the crash was scattered in the roadway creating a traffic hazard. A driver in a 2002 Toyota Camry struck the debris including a tire that came off of the Honda.
Paramedics responded and requested SkyLife land nearby to airlift the young San Jose woman from the Honda to a trauma center, but she unfortunately died from her injuries.
Several other people had minor to moderate injuries and were transported to Community Regional Medical Center.
Tow trucks removed two vehicles from the freeway and investigators are working to determine fault for the crash on the 5 Freeway in Cantua Creek.
