2 Killed in Fresno Crash on Highway 99 Near McKinley Avenue
FRESNO, CA (September 3, 2022) – A DUI crash killed two people on Highway 99 near McKinley Avenue in Fresno.
According to The Fresno Bee and Your Central Valley, the tragic accident took place on Saturday morning. Officers reported the wreck shortly before 6 a.m.
The incident began when for an unknown reason, a black 2015 Hyundai Genesis made an unsafe lane change on northbound Highway 99 in Fresno.
The Hyundai then struck a red 2001 Mitsubishi near McKinley Avenue. The California Highway Patrol said both cars spun out of control and plunged down an embankment.
The Mitsubishi slammed into a tree and ended up entrapped at the base as a result of the collision. The Genesis continued on through a fence and came to stop in a field.
2 Cars Collide
The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 20-year-old man; and his passenger, a 19-year-old Mendota woman, died at the scene. Their names have not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
Paramedics rushed the 21-year-old Fresno man driving the Hyundai to the Community Regional Medical Center for treatment of unknown injuries.
Meanwhile, CHP determined that the driver of the Genesis was under the influence when he hit the other car. They soon arrested him on suspicion of felony DUI causing death.
Officers forced the northbound lanes of Highway 99 to shut down for hours near McKinley following the wreck. The fatal Fresno crash is still under investigation.
