Gabriel Derian, 41, ID’d as Suspect in Menifee Fatal DUI Crash at Berea and Newport
MENIFEE, CA (September 29, 2022) – Authorities detained Gabriel Derian after a fatal DUI crash at Berea and Newport roads in Menifee.
Police determined that the 41-year-old Menifee man was under the influence when the wreck took place on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened when Gabriel Derian was driving a Ford SUV west on Newport Road, approaching Brea Road, in Menifee. At the same time, a BMW SUV was going south on Berea.
Police said he then ran a red light at the intersection. In the process, his car broadsided the BMW at the intersection.
The collision forced the BMW into a Chrysler sedan waiting to make an eastbound turn onto Newport from Berea. My News LA wrote that the accident occurred on September 27 shortly after 3 p.m.
1 Killed, 1 Injured in Wreck
Firefighters arrived at the scene and freed the trapped 41-year-old woman inside the BMW. She sustained critical injuries as a result of the incident.
Paramedics rushed the victim to a regional trauma center, where she died. The 55-year-old Menifee woman driving the Chrysler ended up hospitalized for treatment of minor injuries.
Gabriel Derian survived the crash with major injuries. Medical personnel took him to a trauma center and listed him in stable condition.
Police soon arrested Gabriel Derian on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and DUI resulting in great bodily injury.
Officers forced the area of Berea and Newport roads to shut down for a time following the wreck. The Menifee DUI crash is still under investigation.
