Gabriel Fernandez, 34, Arrested For DUI After Crash at Highway 12 and Burson Road
CALAVERAS COUNTY, CA (April 16, 2021) – Authorities detained Gabriel Fernandez after a DUI crash at Burson Road and Highway 12.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 34-year-old Modesto man was under the influence of alcohol on Thursday afternoon.
The incident happened when Gabriel Fernandez was driving a Nissan Murano south on Burson Road, approaching a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 12.
At the same time, Sammie Franks was operating a tow truck east on Highway 12. CHP said Gabriel Fernandez violated the right of way and drove into the path of the tow truck.
The area where the tow truck was going did not have a stop sign. In the process, the front of the truck collided with the right side of the Nissan.
Sammi Franks, 55, Seriously Injured in Tow Truck Collision
The 55-year-old Angels Camp man lost control of the tow truck and hit the support structure of the overhang in the front of the Burson Market.
CHP affirmed that the support collapsed upon impact. Sammie Franks then slammed into a Chevrolet pickup parked under the overhang and a Toyota pickup in the parking lot.
The Murano left the roadway, plowed into a barbed wire fence and came to a stop in a field. The Modesto Bee and My Mother Lode reported the wreck on April 15 at about 5:20 p.m.
Firefighters along with the paramedics responded to the scene and found Franks suffering from major injuries as a result of the crash.
An air ambulance took him to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. Officers added that Fernandez was also airlifted with moderate injuries.
Meanwhile, authorities arrested and soon booked Fernandez into the Calaveras County Jai on suspicion of DUI causing injury.
