SALINAS, California (October 25, 2016) – A teenage girl was struck and fatally injured near Northridge Mall by a speeding motorcyclist who attempted to flee Tuesday, according to The Californian.
The collision occurred around 10:46 a.m.
As per the article, police disclosed that Gabriela Beas, 17, was walking with her cousin in a crosswalk on North Main Street when she was hit by a Suzuki motorcycle driven by 29-year-old Andrew Bennett.
Beas suffered multiple broken bones on the left side of her body and struck her head on the pavement. She was rushed to Natividad Medical Center, where she tragically died.
Meanwhile, police added that Bennet’s motorcycle slid a long distance before coming to a rest. Bennett reportedly tried leaving the scene on foot but was stopped by several Good Samaritans in the area.
Bennett was also taken to Natividad with several bumps and bruises and a possible concussion.
The 29-year-old rider was believed to have been traveling at about 90 mph at the time of the accident. He was found to be unlicensed in California and with a suspended Oregon license.
Police affirmed that Bennett was cited for reckless driving the week before and the car he used was impounded for 30-days. He will be booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run with death, driving without a license, reckless driving, reckless driving causing injury and no insurance at the scene of a collision.
