Gabriela Verdin, 7 Children Killed in Fresno County Crash on Highway 33
FRESNO COUNTY, CA (January 3, 2021) – A car crash along Highway 33 in Fresno County killed Gabriela Verdin on New Year’s Day.
The California Highway Patrol said several juveniles also died following the accident on Friday night, January 1, near Avenal.
The incident happened when Gabriela Verdin was driving a 2007 Ford F-150 northbound on State Route 33 with seven children as her passengers.
At the same time, a 2013 Dodge Journey was going southbound, south of Sutter Avenue. For an unknown reason, the Dodge drifted onto the dirt shoulder.
Daniel Luna Dead After Fiery Head-On Collision Near Sutter Avenue
The driver of the Journey, 28-year-old Daniel Luna, overcorrected and went back onto the road. The Avenal resident then slammed head-on into the pickup.
CHP affirmed that the truck continued into the dirt shoulder and became fully engulfed in flames. Luna, Verdin and the seven young victims, 6 to 15 years old, were all pronounced dead.
According to the FOX 26 News and Your Central Valley, the fiery wreck took place at around 8 p.m. Loved ones created two GoFundMe pages to help cover the funeral expenses of Verdin and the children.
The cause of the fatal crash is still under investigation.
