
Gary Benson, 69, ID’d as Tesla DUI Suspect in Granite Bay Crash at Walmart
GRANITE BAY, CA (February 25, 2023) – Authorities detained Gary Benson after a Tesla DUI crash at a Walmart in Granite Bay.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 69-year-old man was under the influence of alcohol when the wreck occurred on Saturday.
The incident began when Gary L. Benson was driving a 2015 Tesla through the parking lot of the Walmart in Granite Bay. The store is located at Douglas and Sierra College boulevards.
CHP said the Cameron Park resident then crashed into a Girl Scout cookie stand near the entrance of the Walmart. The accident took place on February 25 shortly before 4 p.m.
Drunk Driver Hits Stand, Injures 3 People
Firefighters arrived at the scene and found three people hurt. The CBS Sacramento and FOX 40 News described the victims as two Girls Scouts, ages 9 and 10, and a 76-year-old woman.
The two children sustained moderate injuries as a result of the collision while the elderly patient survived with major injuries. Paramedics rushed them to a hospital for treatment.
The reports did not disclose the names of the wounded parties and their condition at this time. Meanwhile, a portion of the store ended up closed following the wreck.
Officers arrested Gary Benson on suspicion of felony DUI causing injuries after the crash. They soon booked him into the Placer County Jail.
The Granite Bay DUI crash is still under investigation.
