Gary Lay, 73, Killed in Pedestrian Crash at Winton Way and Gerard Avenue
WINTON, CA (November 24, 2022) – Pedestrian Gary Lay was killed after a crash near Winton Way and Gerard Avenue in Winton.
The coroner’s office identified the 73-year-old man as the victim of the fatal accident which took place last week on Friday.
The incident happened when Gary Lay was crossing eastbound Winton Way, north of Gerard Avenue. At the same time, a 2020 Toyota Prius was traveling north at about 35 mph.
For an unknown reason, the driver of the Toyota failed to see the victim walking in a crosswalk. The California Highway Patrol said in the process, the car struck him.
Man Hit by Car
The Merced Sun Star wrote that the collision occurred on November 18 at about 7:12 p.m. Gary Lay sustained serious injuries as a result of the pedestrian accident.
Paramedics then rushed the man to the Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto, where he soon died. Meanwhile, the woman driving the Toyota stopped and stayed at the site following the incident.
CHP added that the motorist, 73-year-old Darla Suzanne Peters, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when she hit the victim.
Officers forced the intersection to shut down for a time after the collision. The cause of the Winton pedestrian crash is still under investigation.
