SANTA MONICA, Calif. (June 15, 2023) — Gelvy Ortiz, 18, lost his leg when a driver suspected of being DUI crashed into him at a Santa Monica bus stop.
The teenager was sitting at a bus stop around midnight on June 2nd when the alleged drunk driver in a Volkswagen Jetta crashed into him. The crash occurred at 26th Street and Wilshire Boulevard, according to ABC 7 News.
Gelvy Velazquez Ortiz was hospitalized after the collision and had his left leg amputated at the hospital, however, his right leg was also severely injured in the crash. He remains at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center where doctors are working to save his right leg.
The teenager, who is a student at West Adams Preparatory High School, is the youngest of four brothers who migrated to the United States from Guatemala.
The suspect, a 35-year-old Los Angeles man, was arrested after the crash.
A GoFundMe campaign is raising money to help the family with medical bills and expenses.
The crash remains under investigation.
