CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. (Feb. 22, 2023) — Genesis Mendoza-Martinez, 31, of Pittsburg, died last week when his Tesla crashed into a fire truck on the Interstate 680 Freeway.
The deadly crash occurred about 3:50 a.m. on Feb. 18th, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials reported the Pittsburg man’s Tesla crashed into a fire truck that was on the freeway while fire crews helped another motorist in a non-injury crash. The Tesla driver became trapped in the wreckage and was extricated by firefighters. Also, four firefighters were hurt in the crash and treated for minor injuries.
Investigators do not know if the Tesla was operating on the electric vehicle’s “Full Self-Driving” feature at the time of the crash. However, this experimental driver-assist technology is has had issues such as not detecting fire trucks. Recently, Tesla announced recall and a software update to its software program.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is investigating the I-680 Freeway crash and they are working with Tesla to determine what led to the crash.
