
Gerardo Gonzalez, 55, Killed in Merced Crash on Highway 99
MERCED, CA (March 7, 2023) – Big rig driver Gerardo Gonzalez was killed after a DUI crash on Highway 99 in Merced.
The coroner’s office identified the 55-year-old Sacramento man as the victim in the fatal wreck which took place on Monday.
The incident happened when Gerardo Gonzalez was driving a 2021 International at about 55 mph south on Highway 99 in Merced. He was in the No. 2 Lane, just north of O Street.
A 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling at a high rate of speed in the same direction at the time. The California Highway Patrol said the car then tried to pass the semi-truck on the right shoulder.

In the process, the Chevrolet became wedged between the big rig and the guardrail. The semi-truck then jackknifed to the right, rolled over and plunged down an embankment.
The Merced Sun Star wrote that the collision occurred on March 6 at around 11:23 p.m. Gerardo Gonzalez ended up pinned inside the cab of the big rig as a result of the crash.
He died at the scene of the accident. Meanwhile, CHP determined that the speeding driver was under the influence when he hit the semi-truck.
Officers soon arrested the suspect, 35-year-old Anthony Carrasco, for DUI and arrested. They booked the Ceres resident into the Merced County Jail.
CHP forced the southbound lanes of Highway 99 to shut down for several hours following the wreck. The Merced crash is still under investigation.
