Gilbert Castro, 27,  ID’d as Suspect in Fresno County Fatal DUI Crash

FRESNO COUNTY, CA (October 4, 2022) – Authorities detained Gilbert Castro after a fatal DUI crash on Highway 33 in Fresno County.

The California Highway Patrol determined that the 27-year-old Mendota man was under the influence of alcohol when the wreck took place on Monday.

The incident happened when Gilbert S. Castro was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox south on Highway 33 in Fresno County. At the same time, a 2009 Toyota Corolla was going north.

Benedo Vasquez, 22, Killed in Wreck

CHP said he then drifted into the northbound lanes just north of Bass Avenue. In the process, his Chevrolet slammed head-on into the Toyota.

The Fresno Bee wrote that the accident occurred on October 3 at about 3 a.m. The driver of the Corolla, 22-year-old Mendota resident Benedo Alfaro Vasquez, died at the scene of the collision.

Gilbert Castro did not sustain serious injuries following the crash. His Equinox obtained major damage due to the impact of the accident.

Meanwhile, CHP soon arrested Gilbert Castro on suspicion of DUI. The Fresno County DUI crash is still under investigation.
