2 Dead in Collision on Highway 94 at Barrett Junction
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (Dec. 21, 2018) — Kimberly Jamie Quirino Mejia, 21, and Gilberto Antonio Contreras, 35, were killed Thursday night in a collision on state Route 94, just west of state Route 188 in Barrett Junction, according to a report by the San Diego Union Tribune.
The crash was reported at 10:55 p.m. last night on SR-94, also known as Campo Road. The location is on a remote highway that leads to Tecate in Baja California, Mexico.
CHP officers and Border Patrol officers both responded to the scene to help those involved. Quirino Mejia, an El Cajon mother of four children, reportedly lost control of her 2007 Ford Fusion while negotiating a curve in the roadway. She veered into the path of the 2004 Honda Accord driven by Contreras and the two vehicles collided head-on.
The report stated that one of the two vehicles caught on fire during the collision. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and died at the scene.
The family of Contreras have created a Go Fund Me page to help his surviving family members. Contreras was a father of two and lived in Dulzura.
The family of Quirino Mejia also created a Go Fund Me page to help her surviving family members.
San Diego Accident Investigation
Police are investigating the cause of this collision and liability. At this time, it appears that the driver in the Ford Fusion accidentally caused this collision by veering into the path of the other motorist.
