Gilberto Contreras, 35, Killed in Car Accident Near Barrett Junction
EAST COUNTY (December 24, 2018) – A man was killed after a traffic collision along Highway 94 near the Barrett Junction late Thursday night, December 20, according to San Diego Union-Tribune.
Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 35-year-old Gilberto Antonio Contreras, of Dulzura.
As per the article, deputies and California Highway Patrol said Contreras was driving a Honda Accord west on Highway 94 when he was struck head-on by a Ford Fusion.
Kimberly Quirino Mejia, 21, Dead in Highway 94 Crash
The driver of the Fusion, 21-year-old Kimberly Jamie Quirino Mejia, was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed east when she lost control of her car around a curve.
The El Cajon woman then swerved into the westbound lane where she hit Contrera’s car. The Ford ultimately caught fire upon impact.
Officials affirmed that both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The fatal crash occurred at about 10:50 p.m., west of Highway 188 near the Mexican border.
A GoFundMe page has been created to help with Contrera’s funeral expenses and his surviving family. The incident remains under investigation.
