Gilberto Moralez, 24, Kills Another Driver in West Covina DUI Crash
WEST COVINA, CA (June 2, 2021) – Authorities detained Gilberto Moralez after a fatal DUI crash at Vine and Hollenbeck avenues in West Covina.
Police determined that the 24-year-old Pomona man was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when the wreck took place on Saturday.
The incident began when Gilberto Moralez was driving a dark-colored Honda Accord west on Vine Avenue in West Covina. At the same time, a silver Honda Accord was going south on Hollenbeck Avenue.
Police said he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and then slammed into the other car involved. San Gabriel Valley Tribune wrote that the accident occurred on May 29 at around 11:15 p.m.

Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived at the scene. They found the 18-year-old West Covina woman driving the silver Honda severely injured as a result of the collision.
Medical personnel rushed the victim, identified as Kerry Welsh, to a hospital where she died on Sunday. Meanwhile, police arrested Gilberto Moralez on suspicion of DUI.
Authorities soon took him into custody at West Covina jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. Records showed that he has a prior conviction for misdemeanor resisting arrest in Los Angeles County but pleaded no contest.
He was sentenced on July 9, 2015, to three years of probation and 20 days of community labor. The West Covina DUI crash is still under investigation.
