Gloria Bravo De Ayala Hurt in Santa Barbara MTD Bus Crash
SANTA BARBARA (October 17, 2019) — Gloria Bravo De Ayala, 75, of Santa Barbara, was identified as one of several people struck by an Metropolitan Transit District bus that crashed into a bus stop.
The crash also left Eve Debra Johnson, 67, of Santa Barbara, with fatal injuries. Police say that bus driver, Aura Mijangos, crashed into the bus stop last week at Figueroa and Chapala streets.
Mijangos, 60, was heading eastbound in the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District bus on Oct. 9th when the vehicle swerved off West Figueroa Street and up onto the sidewalk. The bus crashed into a bus bench where it struck two pedestrians. Johnson was sitting on the bus bench when the bus ran over her. She died of her injuries at the scene. De Ayala was sitting near her and was critically injured in the crash. She suffered injuries to both legs and was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Wagner said.
The crash took place about 2:20 p.m. as the bus was about to pick up passengers at the location. Police say the bus driver was traveling northbound on Chapala Street and turned right onto eastbound Figueroa Street. It’s at this time that the bus kept turning and ended up on the sidewalk where it struck the pedestrians.
Two people who were on the bus suffered minor injuries.
There will be a celebration of life for Johnson held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Oak Park, 300 W. Alamar St.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation by police. It’s unknown at this time if a mechanical problem, medical issue or driver error was to blame for the fatal crash.
