Guillermo Cortez and Dezhia Lane Injured in Merced County Crash on Highway 140
MERCED COUNTY (May 4, 2019) – One was killed and two were injured after an alleged DUI hit-and-run crash along Highway 140 in Atwater Saturday morning.
The wounded victims have been identified as 18-year-old Guillermo Cortez and 19-year-old Dezhia Lane. Cortez is from Atwater while Lane is a Los Banos resident.
California Highway Patrol said a 2006 Ford Focus was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed east on Highway 140 when its driver, 19-year-old Tristan Shelton, lost control of the car.
The Ford then rolled over four or five times on the shoulder of the road. The accident was reported at 6:54 a.m., just west of Sultana Drive.
Suspect Tristan Shelton Arrested For DUI and Hit-and-Run
According to Merced Sun Star, a 20-year old Winton man riding as a passenger in the Focus was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin.
CHP affirmed that the other two occupants of the overturned vehicle, Cortez and Lane, were treated for minor injuries sustained in the wreck.
Meanwhile, Shelton was seen walking away from the site of the collision. He was arrested but was transported to Mercy Medical Center for medical clearance.
The Merced man will booked into the Merced County Jail on charges of felony DUI and felony hit-and-run. The investigation is ongoing.
