Police say Smith drove across state lines 850 miles to pick her up from her middle school in Thousand Oaks, according to a report by the Ventura County Police Department.
The relationship between the Texas man and the teenager began last December on the internet after the girl’s mother discovered her daughter was communicating with the adult on the internet and the two had met.
Police investigated the incident and got a search warrant on Smith. They learned the El Paso man had allegedly lured the child into a meeting, committed a lewd act with the child and sent her harmful materials. Smith was sent to jail in Texas on a drug charge stemming from one of the warrants, but was later extradited to Ventura County where he now faces sex crime charges with the preliminary hearing set for June 23rd.
Smith plead not guilty to all charges.
