2 Killed in Solo Crash in Bella Vista Community
BELLA VISTA, Calif. (July 9, 2018) — Harold Dean Wilhelm, 80, of Whitmore and Helen Lorene Palmer, 83, of Redding were killed in a solo-vehicle traffic collision on Highway 299 east of Bella Vista on Sunday that sparked a 30-acre brush fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victims were inside a 2009 Honda Accord that became engulfed in flames after it veered off the highway and down an embankment, just west of Woodman Lane.
Police believe the vehicle was heading westbound on Highway 299 at about 60 mph prior to the crash. They are investigating why the driver reportedly turned to the right on the straight part of the roadway. The vehicle hit the westbound righ shoulder and a concrete culvert before it went down the embankment.
Despite efforts from witnesses who stopped to help the victims, they were unable to help and the two occupants died at the scene.
The area was temporarily closed down for the investigation into the matter. The roadway reopened about 2:30 p.m.
