Major Injury Collision on SR1 South in the High Meadows Area

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif., (April 09, 2026) — A head-on crash resulted in major injuries Thursday on Highway 1 South, just south of Carpenter Street in the High Meadows area of Carmel-By-the-Sea.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident occurred on April 9th at approximately 12:22 p.m. with the roadway blocked from Ocean Avenue to Carpenter Street. At least three vehicles were involved, including a blue Subaru, a gray Honda CRV, and a gray Lexus sedan. According to the incident log, an older male, approximately 70 years old, sustained injuries while inside the one vehicle.

Emergency responders, including the Carmel Police Department and fire units, were dispatched to the scene. Due to the severity of the collision, both northbound and southbound lanes were blocked, and assistance was requested to manage traffic. Tow services from United Tow and California Tow were contacted to clear the vehicles from the roadway.

The Monterey CHP division noted that the incident was initially reported as a collision with unknown injuries but was later upgraded to a major injury collision as details emerged. There were visible injuries among the individuals involved, and at least one person appeared dazed and confused, with a noticeable hand injury.

Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the crash and are seeking any witnesses who may have observed the incident. As investigations continue, the community is urged to remain cautious and report any information to the CHP.
