MERCED, Calif. (Jan. 19, 2023) — A head-on crash on South Gurr Road at Shippee Road happened Thursday morning in the Merced area.
The drivers of a white pickup truck and a white 2019 Toyota Camry collided about 10:39 a.m. on Jan. 19th at the Merced intersection, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Toyota driven by Sinthia Fernandez, 22, reportedly veered into the path of the northbound pickup truck, according to the Merced Sun Star.
CHP officials reported two vehicles collided. Also, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by Carlos Reyes Gonzales, 24, of Winton, overturned into a ditch.
Meanwhile, the doors of the Toyota were stuck and Sinthia Fernandez of San Jose became trapped inside. She was not wearing a seat belt and reportedly died at the scene, the Star reported.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Office sent deputies and paramedics to help those injured in the crash. Also, a helicopter landed in the roadway. However, Carlos Gonzales suffered minor injuries in the crash and declined medical help.
Tow trucks came to remove the damaged vehicles and investigators are working on the case to determine fault for the collision.
The crash remains under investigation.
