Mather Heights Elementary Student Killed in Head-on Crash on Mather Boulevard
MATHER, Calif. (Sept. 30, 2026) — A 10-year-old child was killed and two others suffered major injuries after a head-on collision Wednesday on Mather Boulevard near Douglas Road.
At least two vehicles went off the roadway, and the crash prompted a temporary closure of both northbound and southbound lanes.
The crash was reported at approximately 8:11 a.m. September 30, 2026, on Mather Boulevard just south of Douglas Road, according to preliminary information from the California Highway Patrol.
Initial reports indicated a southbound gray Hyundai Elantra sedan crossed double yellow lines into oncoming traffic and collided with a white or silver Chevrolet Equinox. A white Ford Mustang and a blue Hyundai were also reported in connection with the collision, with CHP later confirming that three vehicles were involved.
The collision was described as a head-on crash, with one vehicle reportedly coming to rest in bushes off the roadway. Debris from the collision was scattered across all lanes, and two vehicles were initially described as not driveable.
2 Injured; Child Killed in Head-on Crash
Three people were transported to a hospital with major injuries following the crash. The 10-year-old child, a student at the nearby Mather Heights Elementary School, was among those transported. Sadly, the child later died following the crash.
CHP officers subsequently reported major front-end damage to two vehicles and requested tow trucks to remove the damaged vehicles. Evidence preservation was also requested for two of the vehicles as investigators worked to document the scene.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., both northbound and southbound lanes were blocked because of the crash and vehicles that had left the roadway. Officers considered a hard closure of the roadway while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
By approximately 10:15 a.m., the roadway had been cleared and reopened, according to CHP. Tow crews transported the involved vehicles to a central tow yard as the investigation continued.
The circumstances leading up to the head-on collision remain under investigation.
