Helen Smothers, 84, Injured in East Sonora Crash on Tuolumne Road
EAST SONORA, CA (July 7, 2021) – A head-on crash left Helen Smothers injured on Tuolumne Road in East Sonora.
The California Highway Patrol identified the 84-year-old Columbia woman as the victim in the accident which took place on Monday.
The incident began when Helen Smothers was driving a 2010 Toyota Tacoma pickup north on Tuolumne Road in East Sonora. At the same time, a Nissan Versailles was going south.
Another Woman Hurt in Head-On Collision
For an unknown reason, the elderly driver turned left into the path of the Nissan. CHP said in the process, the two cars crashed head-on near the Mono Way intersection.
Firefighters along with the paramedics arrived at the scene and found Helen Smothers and the motorist in the Versailles hurt. Both sustained minor wounds as a result of the wreck.
Medical personnel took them to the Adventist Health Sonora for treatment. Meanwhile, CHP shut down the turn lane from eastbound Mono onto southbound Tuolumne for about an hour following the wreck.
My Mother Lode wrote that the collision occurred on July 5 shortly after 11 a.m. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the East Sonora crash.
