HELENDALE (May 31, 2016)- Thomas Lee Duitsman, 58, of Barstow was killed in a head-on collision that took place Tuesday afternoon on National Trails Highway between Holcomb Ranch and Rodeo roads, a California Highway Patrol report said.
The crash which was reported at 12:08 p.m. involved a semi-truck driven by James Hendrix, a 1998 Chevrolet pickup driven by Thomas Lee Duitsman, and possibly a Chrysler Sebring.
Per the CHP report, the semi-truck and the pickup were the vehicles that initially collided.
Police officials described one vehicle as being “smashed” while the semi was allegedly wrapped around a steel pole.
Paramedics responded to the scene and airlifted a passenger who was in the pickup truck to a local hospital for treatment. Duitsman, who was driving the pickup truck, died of his injuries at the scene.
James Hendrix was also badly injured in the collision. He remains at Barstow Hospital and will survive.
At least two of the vehicles were towed away from the scene.
No further information was provided.
