HESPERIA, California (June 3, 2015) — Howard Shackelford, 70, of Hesperia was killed Tuesday afternoon when his pickup truck was rear-ended by another driver in a pickup truck at the intersection of I Avenue and Mojave Street, according to a press release by the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner.

The crash was reported at 12:56 p.m. Mr. Shackelford’s gold 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck was heading southbound on I Avenue when he stopped at the intersection. A pedestrian came up to Shackelford’s car to speak to him and was leaning on the window opening. The second driver, a 33-year-old Victorville man in a red Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, failed to stop and slammed into the back of the man’s pickup truck.

Paramedics transported Shackelford to Desert Regional Hospital, but he died of his injuries at 2:17 p.m. the same day.

The pedestrian suffered a cut on his arm and was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton as a precaution, the Press Enterprise reported.

The fatal car accident is under investigation by The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigation Team Division.
