HESPERIA PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT: Man Killed in Car Accident on Main Street
HESPERIA, California (July 7, 2015) — A man in his 40s or 50s was killed Sunday night when he was hit by the driver of a Chrysler PT Cruiser while attempting to cross Main Street, near Fifth Street, a San Bernardino Sheriff Department report said.
Police received a 911 call about 8:51 p.m. about the pedestrian accident. Upon their arrival they found the injured man in the roadway where he had been hit in the southbound lanes by the driver. Paramedics responded and airlifted the man to Desert Valley Hospital where he later died of his injuries at 9:47 p.m. the same day.
Police have not released his identity pending notification of his family. The Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is going over evidence gathered from the scene and witness statements to determine liability for this man’s death.
“My condolences go out to the family of this man as they cope with this tragedy,” said Attorney James Johnson.
Pedestrian accidents are unfortunately common in Southern California and more likely to be deadly during the evening hours. In fact, 64-percent of all fatal pedestrian accidents in the United States take place between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reports. Roughly two-thirds of all victims are also male.
There were 14 people killed in Hesperia traffic accidents in 2012, according to the latest CHP Statewide Integrated Traffic Report. Three of the deaths and 11 injuries were pedestrians who were hit by vehicles. Overall, more than 4,200 people died in pedestrian accidents in the United States annually, the NHTSA reports.
Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians even if they are not in a designated crosswalk, but too often they fail to slow down or stop when one enters the roadway. However, it’s also incumbent upon the pedestrian to not dart out into traffic and be mindful of their own safety. Police will look at evidence here to determine the exact circumstances including whether the driver may have been speeding, if any witnesses saw what happened and whether anyone was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
