Highway 99 in Fresno is Deadliest Road in the United States

Highway 99 Ranks No. 1 on List of Deadliest Highways in America

FRESNO, CALIF. (May 7, 2018) — A 400-mile stretch of California roadway that runs north and south through the Central Valley is the deadliest major highway in the entire United States, according to a report by the consumer website ValuePenguin.

Highway 99 or state Route 99, traverses through the centers of large metropolitan cities including Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto and Fresno, and reports a staggering death rate of 62.3 fatal accidents for each 100 miles between 2011 and 2015.

The report lists the top 50 deadliest highways in the country based on the number of deaths per every 100 miles.

Highway 99 outranked the following deadly highways: The Interstate 45 in Texas was second deadliest with 56.5 fatalities; the Interstate 95 between Florida and Maine came in third with 55.1 fatalities; the Interstate 10 Freeway between California and Florida was fourth with 54.5 fatalities; and the Interstate 75 between Florida and Michigan ranked fifth with 47.2 fatalities.

“Most of the highways on this list connect major cities and are often used by motorists traveling on longer trips,” said Attorney James Johnson, a California personal injury lawyer. “Regardless of where a collision occurs, we know the three main causes of fatal crashes are speed, alcohol and distracted or reckless driving.”

This year alone, there has already been numerous fatalities as well as injury crashes on Highway 99. The most recent was reported this past weekend when a man was killed on Highway 99, just north of Ord Ranch Road in Biggs. On Friday, a man was struck by multiple vehicles on Highway 99 near V Street in Merced. Last month, a 29-year-old Stockton man died in a Highway 99 crash in Lodi.  A bicyclist was killed on Highway 99 near East Yosemite Avenue

Two other factors that impact Highway 99, is the fact that it is ranked as being the darkest and ranks second for having the most drunk driving fatalities.
