Two Adults on Bikes, Three Children in Trailers Hospitalized

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (July 8, 2024) – A hit-and-run driver struck a man and woman riding electric bicycles with trailers carrying three children on Haster Street at Twin Tree Lane in Garden Grove.

The major-injury crash occurred at around 7:35 p.m. on Sunday, July 7th, according to the Orange County Register.

Ceferino Ascencion Ramos, 29, of Santa Ana, was driving a black 2003 Toyota Camry struck the group of five people and fled the scene, but a witness followed the vehicle and called 911 for help. Garden Grove police pulled the suspect over about a mile from the crash scene and he was arrested for both hit-and-run and DUI.

Meanwhile, a 5-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and their 27-year-old father were all critically injured and transported to a hospital. The 25-year-old mother, Angela Hernandez Mejia, and her 8-month-old daughter, were hospitalized in stable condition. The mother was released from hospital the later on the same day. The 27-year-old man and the 25-year-old woman were not identified.

Several days after the collision, the 5-year-old boy was in a coma, had two surgeries, but had no brain activity. He was declared brain dead on Thursday.

The father and the couple’s 6-year-old daughter, Gianna, were still in the hospital as of July 12th.

Finally, the suspect did not enter a plea at his arraignment on Tuesday, but he is scheduled for an arraignment on July 25 in the West Justice Center in Westminster.
