Hunter Bean Killed in Pedestrian Accident on State Route 78 in Vista

Escondido Man Killed After Being Struck by Vehicle on SR-78
Vista, CA (May 13, 2025) — Hunter Michael Bean, 26, of Escondido, died late Saturday, May 3rd, after being struck by a vehicle while standing outside his disabled pickup truck on State Route 78 in Vista, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Escondido man died at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries, the report states. The incident occurred around 11:31 p.m. on the eastbound side of SR-78, just east of Vista Village Drive.
Authorities say Hunter Bean was outside his vehicle when he was hit by another car traveling on the highway. Emergency crews were called to the scene, but paramedics pronounced him dead just minutes later at 11:43 p.m.
“This is a tragedy for the family of this young man,” said Attorney James Johnson. “This never should have happened. Motorists must pass disabled vehicles with caution, especially when someone is standing near their vehicle.”
Johnson added that drivers should never exit their vehicles on highways or freeways on the left side. Put your flashers on, remain inside the car with your seatbelt fastened, and call 911 for help.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. Officials have classified the manner of death as accidental. No contributing conditions were listed in the coroner’s findings.
Next of kin have been notified, and further details — including whether the driver who struck Hunter Bean remained at the scene — have not yet been made public.
