HUNTINGTON BEACH: 2 Men Burned by Propane Tank Fire at Seabreeze Church BBQ
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (December 12, 2016) — Two men were hospitalized after being burned Saturday afternoon when a propane tank caught on fire at a barbecue held at the Seabreeze Church at 18162 Gothard Street, according to a report by the Orange County Register.
The incident took place just before 1 p.m. The propane tank ignited as they were switching out an empty one with a full one on the barbecue.
Huntington Beach Police and paramedics responded to the scene and transported the two men to hospital for further treatment.
The even at the church was a basketball event called Upward Games.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and liability will be determined.
Propane Tank Safety
Propane barbecues are widely used by homeowners and organizations for parties and events, but the gas is highly flammable and dangerous. Indeed, every year in the United States there are roughly 600 fires or explosions take place involving gas grills, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. At least 30 people suffer injuries due to these incidents.
Safety standards adopted in 1995 required that an “over-fill prevention device” is installed on all new three-prong propane gas tanks. Consumers were asked to replace more dangerous older models that have five prongs. Other standards for grills include a device to limit gas flow if a hose ruptures, a shut off mechanism if the grill overheats and a device that would prevent gas flowing if connections become loose.
