Bicyclist Killed in Car Accident on PCH; Driver Arrested DUI
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (May 27, 2021) — A fatal Huntington Beach bicycle accident happened Thursday in front of Dairy Queen on Pacific Coast Highway.
The 1:35 p.m. crash happened in the afternoon at the busy Huntington Beach intersection across from the beach.
A 68-year-old man riding a black bicycle was hit by a silver sedan as he crossed PCH northbound at 1st Street. Police believe the bicyclist failed to yield to the traffic signal. The rider suffered major injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local trauma center where he later died.
Robert Calvin Mata, 23, of Bloomingdale, was driving the involved 2007 Toyota Yaris. Additionally, he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs after the collision, according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.
